After over 20 years of being closed to the public, the Alberta Rose Theatre has reemerged as one of Portland’s premier settings for acoustic music, art house films and live performances.

They’ve started up a series showcasing neighborhood bands called “There Goes the Neighborhood”, and we’ve been invited to play this Saturday night. Come check out this gorgeous new venue, and bring a friend for free with this handy 2-For-1 Coupon.

Join us the last Saturday of the month at one of our favorite pubs, McMenamin’s White Eagle Saloon. I’ve been told this is one of Portland’s oldest bars and that it used to be a destination of Portland’s infamous Shanghai Tunnels. I’ve also been told it’s haunted. Best of all, they serve baskets of these really great deep fried mini-corndogs. Mmm… mini-corndogs…

We’re playing a rollicking set, joined by the old-timey force-to-be-reckoned-with Scott McDougall and indie rock trio Rozendal.

Happy 2010! The band and I have been busy rehearsing and laying down tracks for our new album.

In December we spent a day recording drums at The Woods, a new venue in Sellwood that used to be a funeral chapel. The stage is where they used to lay out the bodies for veiwing… pretty creepy, huh? But the acoustics in there are gorgeous, and the high ceiling and wood floors made for some really killer drum sounds. Pun intended.

We’ll be finishing up tracking over the next couple months, and we couldn’t be more excited about it! In the meantime, we’ve got some live shows coming up.

Looking forward to seeing you in an exciting new year.

much love,

More Than Love and Child of Everyone were recorded by David Fuller who runs Sunroom Portable Studios… ironically located in his dark basement.

The band spent an afternoon tracking these tunes last April, and we finally got around to mixing them. They are perfectly rough around the edges and give a good idea of where we’re going with the new record once we start recording this fall.

That’s Jonathan Behr on drums, Zach Pace on bass, Jeremy Murphin on electric guitar, David Fuller on accordion/electric guitar/percussion/melodica, and Katie Sawicki on vocals and banjo.

We hope you like it! See you at a show sometime soon.

First thing is that I’ve been asked to play a three-week happy hour residency at Biddy McGraw’s during the month of May, starting tonight.

My first ever tour down to L.A. kicks off tonight (Feb 18) in Eugene at Sam Bond’s Garage! Over the next few days we’ll hit San Francisco, L.A., Monterey, Santa Cruz, and Ashland, finishing up in Portland with a pared-down band show at the Alberta Street Pub.

I’ll be opening most of the shows, then I’ll be joining Katie Sawicki and Ashleigh Flynn on banjo, electric guitar, and accordion for their sets as well. I think they’re trying to get their money’s worth out of me.

Seeing as this is my first time playing in CA, if you know anyone who might be into the show, I’d love it if you’d let them know we’re coming. Check out the shows page for specific dates and times.

And Portlanders, I’d love it if you’d come out to the Alberta Street Pub on Thursday the 26th (7pm) to welcome us home.

Much love from the road,

We’re doing a duo show in Bellingham tomorrow night (Jan 29) in anticipation of our upcoming California tour with Ashleigh Flynn.

That show will be followed by a full band extravaganza at one of my favorite Seattle establishments, the Conor Byrne Pub, on Saturday night (Jan 31). And that is gonna rock.

I can say so for certain because I was there when we were practicing in a low-ceilinged echoy basement, and if it sounded good in there, it’s sure to sound good at ye olde pub with beer in hand, right? Right!
