In December we spent a day recording drums at The Woods, a new venue in Sellwood that used to be a funeral chapel. The stage is where they used to lay out the bodies for veiwing… pretty creepy, huh? But the acoustics in there are gorgeous, and the high ceiling and wood floors made for some really killer drum sounds. Pun intended.

We’ll be finishing up tracking over the next couple months, and we couldn’t be more excited about it! In the meantime, we’ve got some live shows coming up.

More Than Love and Child of Everyone were recorded by David Fuller who runs Sunroom Portable Studios… ironically located in his dark basement.

The band spent an afternoon tracking these tunes last April, and we finally got around to mixing them. They are perfectly rough around the edges and give a good idea of where we’re going with the new record once we start recording this fall.

That’s Jonathan Behr on drums, Zach Pace on bass, Jeremy Murphin on electric guitar, David Fuller on accordion/electric guitar/percussion/melodica, and Katie Sawicki on vocals and banjo.

My last full band show of the summer is coming up next weekend at the Alberta Street Pub, and we’d love to see you! We’re taking a break until October to write some new songs, make an animated video, retool the website, let various band members get married, and prepare for recording a new record.

But before all that, we’re playing one last show! Opening up the evening is Noah Gundersen, one of the best and brightest up-and-coming songwriters I’ve seen in a long time — and hey, he’s from Lewis County, right where I grew up! First thing is that I’ve been asked to play a three-week happy hour residency at Biddy McGraw’s during the month of May, starting tonight. I’ll be playing there for the next three Thursdays from 6 to 8 pm, and I’ll have a few special guests with me. Kicking it off tonight will be Katie Sawicki, and we’ll be previewing material from our upcoming East Coast tour. Come on out for a drink!

And that’s the second bit of news–I’m finally coming back east! For the first week of June I’ll be touring as a side-man for Katie Sawicki, playing banjo, accordion, and electric guitar. Then I’ll spend another week playing a few dates of my own, and three of those will be full band shows with Dave Chalfant (from the Neilds) on bass, Jim Henry on electric guitar and dobro, and Ben Laine (from Fancy Trash) on drums. Should be good times!

That show will be followed by a full band extravaganza at one of my favorite Seattle establishments, the Conor Byrne Pub, on Saturday night (Jan 31). And that is gonna rock.

I can say so for certain because I was there when we were practicing in a low-ceilinged echoy basement, and if it sounded good in there, it’s sure to sound good at ye olde pub with beer in hand, right? Right!

That and a new sound deserves a new look, right? Since moving back to Portland last summer, I’ve put together a band that I’m pretty damned excited about. We’re way more rockin’ than I used to be by my lonesome. If you caught one of our debut shows at the Axe & Fiddle or The East Burn last November, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Our next show all together will be up in Seattle at the Conor Byrne pub on Saturday, January 31st. Catch us if you can!

Folk fans, don’t worry though–I’m still doing some solo and duo shows over the next couple months, including a folk-trio tour down to L.A. and back with Katie Sawicki and Ashleigh Flynn in February.
